Stage One Workshops provide practical training, industry insight and networking opportunities for theatre producers across the UK.

For 50 years, Stage One has supported producers at every stage of their development through a range of workshops focused on commercial theatre. These programmes build skills, expand industry knowledge and connect participants with peers and professionals across the sector. To date, we have delivered over 25 three-day Andrew Treagus West End workshops and supported more than 700 producers.

Each year we plan, deliver and facilitate a varied programme of practical training in London’s West End and Regional Venues in the UK.

The flagship three-day West End Workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the commercial theatre industry.

Led by experienced practitioners, sessions cover key areas including:

Fundraising and investor management
Budgeting and general management
Contracting a West End theatre
Marketing and press
Touring and co-producing

The workshop also includes dedicated networking time and a West End show visit, offering insight into the industry in practice.

The Andrew Treagus West End workshop costs £425 which covers all food and drink across the three days and cost of your show ticket. Please note if the cost of the workshop is a barrier to your attendance we have subsidy available to eligible applicants.

In 2023, Stage One renamed their West End Workshop in memory of Andrew Treagus. Renowned General Manager & Producer for over 40 years, Andrew was instrumental in creating this unique insight into producing in the West End for future theatre leaders.

These workshops alternate each year to provide focused, sector-specific training.

Off West End Workshop:
A one day workshop taking place in a fringe venue in London. Explores co-producing opportunities, mid-scale budgets, transfers, marketing, raising finance, royalties and tax relief.
Commercial Touring Workshop:
A one day workshop taking place in a regional producing venue somewhere in the UK. Focuses on producing outside London, including regional theatre, commercial touring, co-productions and the relationship between subsidised and commercial sectors.

Both workshops are aimed at early career producers and are open to anyone who wishes to purchase a ticket.

Stage One delivers additional workshops throughout the year in response to industry demand.

Recent examples include a Producing New Musicals Workshop, offering practical guidance on developing new work and navigating the musical theatre landscape.

Participants may also gain access to Stage Two workshops; smaller, bespoke sessions focused on specific areas of producing that take place across the year.

The best way to describe the experience of the West End workshop is that it felt like a magic door to an entirely new part of the theatre industry had been opened up to me. As someone who has worked as a producer in theatre for nearly 15 years, I was blown away at the amount of information I didn't know, and by the end of the 3 days it felt like hundreds of gaps in my knowledge had been filled.
